Solar Panel Bike Lanes
Revealed yesterday on, November 13th, 2014, the solar panel bike lane, inspired by “Starry Night”, pays tribute to the great Vincent van Gogh. The solar panel bike lane consists of several illuminated units that emit LED light in soft twinkles and glows. The current artist and mastermind behind the project is Daan Roosegaarde, who teamed up with Heijmans Infrastructure, and together they developed a 1-kilometer long Van-Gogh-Roosegaarde solar panel bicycle lane which opened on November 13th, 2014, in Eindhoven. Included within the solar panel bike lane units are thousands of twinkling stones that feature both solar panel LED lights and glow in the dark technology. The light pattern represents the work of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, honoring the dashes of color which are represented throughout his paintings. Roosegaarde stated,” I wanted to create a place that people will experience in a special way, the technical combined with experience, that’s what techno poetry means to me.” Even though Roosegaarde is mainly an artist, he is no stranger to the solar panel technology. He has also been working on a series of “Smart Highways” which is a concept that combines light, energy, and road signs that react according to their present traffic situation. Since the start of the Van-Gogh-Roosegaarde project, neighboring regions of the Netherlands, such as France and Belgium are undergoing a yearlong tribute to the artistry of Vincent Van Gogh, celebrating his 125th anniversary since his death. The current solar panel bike lane is part of the larger 335 kilometer bike path which connects through several regions of Van Gogh’s homeland and split into 5 individual round trips.
